WITNESS

Learning

Incorporating Virtual Reality technology, ‘The Eye as Witness’ is a touring exhibition coming to The Holocaust Exhibition and Learning Centre in Huddersfield from the National Holocaust Centre and Museum.

Through the use of this innovative technology, pupils can stand in the footsteps of the photographers, authors and witnesses of historical sources and can explore the broader contexts in which they were created and evaluate the potential impact of bias.

OPTION 1: WITNESS
(Half Day)

In this facilitated Active Learning Session, pupils explore the ‘Eye as Witness’ exhibition and relevant elements of the ‘Through Our Eyes’ permanent exhibition. Through a range of activities, they will develop a broad understanding of how photography and other sources can influence our understanding of the Holocaust.

Following an introduction to the topic, the class will be split into 2 groups. The first group will explore the ‘Eye as Witness’ exhibition and each pupil will experience ‘stepping into’ a historical photograph using the VR technology.  The second group will explore the photographic sources in the permanent ‘Through Our Eyes’ exhibition, considering the motivations and emotions of both the photographers and subjects within them. The groups will then swap so that all pupils experience both exhibitions.

Next the whole class will engage with the ‘Forever Project’, a digital resource that enables pupils to listen to, and ask questions of, a pre-recorded video testimony from a Holocaust survivor.  The technology involved enables pupils to ask their questions to the survivor, which they will then answer.

The session concludes with some time to review and reflect upon what they have learned throughout the session and how this can be applied in their future studies.

OPTION 2: WITNESS+
(Full Day)

In the full day programme, pupils will more deeply explore the issues and challenges of interpreting historical sources through the context of the Holocaust.  To accomplish this, the pupils will participate in 2 facilitated 90-minute Active Learning Sessions:

First, pupils will explore the ‘Eye as Witness’ exhibition, its displays, video testimony and art installation. Each pupil will also experience ‘stepping into’ a historical photograph using the VR technology.  This will be followed by a whole-class session with the ‘Forever Project’, a digital resource that enables pupils to listen to, and ask questions of, a pre-recorded video testimony from a Holocaust survivor.  The technology involved enables pupils to ask their questions to the survivor, which they will then answer. The session concludes with some time to review and reflect upon what they have learned throughout the session and how this can be applied in their future studies.

After their lunch break, pupils with our ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’ Active Learning Session.  This session aims to develop media literacy and asks the question, can we always believe what we see? The pupils are encouraged to engage with, interpret and evaluate photographic images within our exhibition and their value as sources of historical evidence. They will debate to what extent images we see today, on the internet, on TV or in print are accurate and to what extent we might need to question and interpret what we see. In a world of #fakenews this session helps students develop the skills needed to critically evaluate information sources.
