Are you interested in exploring how knowledge of the past can inform our decisions today and tomorrow? Do you have past experience of working with (or caring for) vulnerable or elderly people? Do you understand the care that is needed when working with someone else’s life story?
Would you like to know more about how the Holocaust has shaped our contemporary understanding of genocide, ethnic persecution, and human rights laws? Are you interested in intergenerational trauma?
Or do perhaps have lived experience of transgenerational trauma?
The Memorial Gestures Residency Programme will support three artists in self-directed research on the Holocaust Centre North Archive and its survivor community. We care for the collections of 90+ Jewish refugees/families who made their lives in the North of England. Find out more about our survivor community here!
The Iby Knill Bursaries will support 2x UK-based artists with £4800 and 1x International Artist with £6000 (covering some extra travel/possible accommodation costs) over the course of a 6-month remote residency. Artists are invited to explore our collection by responding to stories and themes they feel have contemporary relevance.
Our aim as a center is to actively contribute to prevent genocides, hate between groups and oppression of specific minoritised groups. That is what championing diversity and promoting inclusion means to us. We also know that all voices need to be part of the conversation and that is why we want this opportunity to be considered as widely as possible by like minded socially engaged artists.We recognise and value the benefits of a diverse workforce, and therefore welcome applications from people of all backgrounds.

About Holocaust Centre North
In our archive you will find traces of: Pre-war Jewish life & culture, forced displacement/migration, child refugees, trauma & intergenerational trauma, memory & postmemory, loss, internment, forced labour, survival & liberation, childhood & youth, diasporic identities, and making a new life in the North of England. We believe these traces of the past can help us to understand and amplify contemporary struggles.
Our collection includes: Photographs, letters, legal documents, artefacts, textiles, ephemera & postcards as well as an extensive collection of video & audio testimony with Holocaust survivors and their families. To listen to some of our survivors stories, click here.
Holocaust Centre North is committed to fostering a culture of care when talking about difficult/traumatic histories. We believe that we need to learn how to tell challenging stories better. Both with more care and complexity, but also in ways that challenge conventional methods and narrative structures. Would you like to think and work with us?
Holocaust Centre North welcomes applications from artists working in any discipline: (animation, dance, drawing, film, installation, interactive creative technologies, moving image, painting, performance, photography, sculpture, socially engaged practice, sound, textiles, VR and AR, writing, etc.)
We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants with a history of working with young people/ vulnerable adults/ elderly people. (Experience can be informal or formal!)
